About

My name is John Travis. This blog is focused around development work throughout Africa, though mostly centered around Kisangani, DRC. From mid-January through late May 2011, I’ll be interning on joint sustainable agricultural development project in Kisangani. The project is being run by the Borlaug Institute and AFRICOM to create sustainable food sources on Congolese military bases.

While this is my first trip to Africa, I previously served for three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sevastopol, Ukraine, and am currently a International Affairs graduate student at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M.

The name of this blog comes from these lines from the Mark Doty poem “Fog Suite”:

What I love about language

is what I love about fog:

what comes between us and things

grants them their shine.
